Provided is a technique for producing high-quality terephthalic acid by simply and efficiently removing a coloring substance by-produced when a terephthalic acid-based polyester containing the coloring substance is chemically recycled. A process for producing terephthalic acid, comprising the following steps (a) and (b): (A) a step of hydrolyzing a terephthalic acid-based polyester containing a coloring substance; and (b) a step of filtering the hydrolysis product obtained in the step (a) through a separation membrane having a pore size of 0.005 to less than 0.45 micro m, removing the coloring substance to the non-permeable liquid side, and obtaining an aqueous solution containing terephthalic acid as a permeable liquid
