[Problem] to provide a device and a method for assisting in taking a beverage, which allow a user to receive assistance in taking a beverage by a relatively natural action. Solution: In a beverage intake assistance device 10, a control device 34 closes a control valve 32 and operates an air pump 28 when a sensor 26 detects contact or approach of a user's mouth. The control device 34 also causes the control valve 32 to open and also causes the air pump 28 to stop or continue to operate when the sensor 26 detects the end of contact or approach of the user's mouth.
