The present invention relates to a composition for preventing, treating, or alleviating arthritis, comprising an Elaeocarpus sylvestris extract or a mixture of an Elaeocarpus sylvestris extract and sulfasalazine as an active ingredient, and the Elaeocarpus sylvestris extract according to the present invention suppresses the production of nitric oxide, suppresses inflammatory cytokines, suppresses the production of iNOS or COX-2, suppresses the activity of NF-?B or I?Ba, suppresses aggrecan expression, reduces an arthritis index, or exhibits foot edema inhibitory activity, and in particular, it was confirmed that a mixture of an Elaeocarpus sylvestris extract and sulfasalazine had excellent effects of suppressing the production of nitric oxide, suppressing inflammatory cytokines, suppressing the production of iNOS or COX-2, suppressing the activity of NF-?B or I?Ba, reducing an arthritis index, or suppressing foot edema compared to the case of treatment with sulfasalazine alone.
