A polarizing plate according to the present invention has a polarizer and a protective layer disposed on at least one side of the polarizer, and the surface roughness Sdr according to ISO 25178 of a polarizer end face is 12 percent or more. In one embodiment, the thickness of the polarizer is 20 micro m or less. In one embodiment, the polarizing plate has a shape other than a rectangle. A retardation-layer-equipped polarizing plate according to the present invention includes the abovementioned polarizing plate and a retardation layer, the retardation layer being disposed on the side opposite to the side of the polarizer on which the protective layer is disposed.
