A biosensor for determining organic matter concn. and biological O2 demand (BOD) in water is described. The biosensor measures these parameters electrochemically under anaerobic conditions using a mediator-less biofuel cell which is stable for ≥6 months. Electrochemically active bacteria, obtained from waste water and sludge, are utilized. During measurement of BOD, the microorganisms are cultured allowing the biosensor to be operated without artifical addition of microorganisms.
